The first ruffle of self defense is to not be there when the attacker strikes. Even strong defenses potentially can be overcome and a stronger attack against a strong attack does not necessarily equal an effective defensive posture; there is almost always some resulting effect. Simply not being there when an attack hits — like the boxer who steps aside when the opponent tries to strike — means the attacker expels efforts but you remain unscathed.
