Illumio Inc., a zero-trust security firm, announced the general release of a new integrated solution created in collaboration with Microsoft Corp. to offer zero-trust enforcement to the Azure Firewall.

Illumio for Microsoft Azure Firewall is a zero-trust enforcement point for seeing and securing all communication between Azure resources that connect via the Azure Firewall. The solution increases resilience to ransomware and other threats while maximizing Azure Firewall’s impact and value as a security investment.

Zero trust is a cybersecurity concept that believes all users and devices, even those within the network perimeter, are potential threats. It necessitates constant authentication and permission for resource access, lowering the risk of data breaches and preventing attackers’ lateral movement.

The new service helps Azure Firewall users secure and safeguard enterprise cloud environments by serving as the entry and exit point for data as it traverses the hybrid cloud ecosystem. It is designed to assist enterprises aiming to lower their risk of breaches and improve cyber resilience. Illumio for Azure Firewall enables one-to-one mapping between a resource and its metadata in Azure and its related workload and labels in Illumio, allowing users to protect distinct areas of their cloud environment.

The service’s advantages include straightforward policy creation. According to Illumio, traditional firewall configurations frequently tether security rules to IP addresses or hostnames, often volatile elements in a continually changing cloud ecosystem. Organizations may use Illumio for Azure Firewall to create modern context-based security rules that are naturally responsive to changes in Azure installations.

The new service’s improved application uptime enables organizations to innovate and develop without concern of unintentionally undermining mission-critical services. Security teams can check and authenticate the result and impact of their security policies before enforcing them with the help of a simulation mode that secures workloads and apps.

The service also enables zero trust on a large scale, with zero-trust segmentation restrictions that reduce the impact of cyberattacks, decreasing risk and enhancing resilience. Illumio for Azure Firewall provides enterprises with simplified context-based visibility of any communication across Azure Firewall and Azure network security groups, aiding them in prioritizing and applying the most impactful security rules.

Narayan Annamalai, General Manager at Microsoft, stated, “Illumio for Microsoft Azure Firewall helps modernize firewall policy management by making it easy to enforce zero trust.”
