Akamai Technologies Inc., a content delivery network and cloud services provider, recently unveiled a new API security solution. The solution is designed to counter the rising API attacks and detect business logic abuse within APIs.

The API Security solution incorporates technology acquired by Akamai from its recent acquisition of Neosec Inc., a platform provider specializing in API detection and response. API Security is compatible with all API gateways, Web Applications and API Protection systems, and cloud implementations, offering robust defense against API attacks.

Akamai asserts that API security has become an essential focus for organizations due to the escalating growth of API attacks. According to Akamai’s report in April, API attacks surged by 137% in 2022. After a Web Application and API Protection (WAAP) product authorizes an API, security teams lose visibility into its usage within the organization. Malicious actors are reportedly exploiting this blind spot and targeting the extensive API attack surface.

The latest API Security solution seeks to enhance API activity visibility by incorporating behavioral analytics to detect intricate threats effectively. By leveraging a distinctive data lake, the solution improves detection capabilities through in-depth analysis of historical data.

The new service has essential features like API discovery, visibility, risk auditing, and threat-hunting. An intriguing component is the Shadow Hunt threat-hunting managed service, where human analysts interpret machine learning signals to conduct thorough investigations. With the ability to monitor their APIs, users can ensure protection by recording API activity, swiftly detecting potential breaches, and safeguarding customer data.

Rupesh Chokshi, Akamai’s Senior Vice President and General Manager of Application Security, said, “Recent breaches have painfully revealed the necessity of API security solutions. Preventing API-based attacks by guarding endpoints and checking credentials is no longer sufficient. Akamai’s API Security gives organizations the ability to monitor API behavior in any platform or gateway to ensure that business processes are running smoothly and securely.”

The new product seamlessly complements Akamai’s App and amp; API Protector solution, creating a comprehensive protection strategy. The combined approach offers extensive API discovery, layered detection, and tailored responses to thwart threats or tackle issues, all manageable from a centralized control center.
